How Much Are Deposits For Scooters in Chiang Mai?
Most rental companies will require a cash deposit, which typically ranges from 1,000–5,000 THB. If the amount of cash being requested is above 5,000 THB for a simple scooter then politely decline and take your business elsewhere.
Please note deposits for big bikes may be higher due to the higher bike value.
Reputable shops will only require a photocopy of your passport and this is standard.
If you do crash a scooter and try to do a runner, they may forward your details to the police to stop you at the border. Therefore it’s best to own up to any damages you may cause instead of trying to flee problems, the repair costs will be far less than a missed flight.
Should I leave my passport as a deposit for scooter rental in Chiang Mai?
Some less reputable shops may ask to hold your passport as collateral.
Never let a scooter rental company keep your passport as a deposit! Some companies will ask for this, simply ask to make a cash deposit instead.
We DO NOT recommend renting from a shop that wants to keep your passport. This is very risky and opens you up to potential extortion and also leaves you without your passport which is required for checking into hotels. Don’t do it!

Lets face it, you’re here to have fun. If you’re used to riding back home, then chances are you’re not going to want an underpowered or boring bike for your holiday. However one thing to consider is that out here, speed kills.
You’ll rarely find the opportunity to truly open up the throttle so 1000cc bikes aren’t strictly necessary for Chiang Mai’s mountain roads unless you really just love power.
A few bikes we feel are perfect for the mountain twisties of northern Thailand are:
Triumph Scrambler 400x (1,300 THB per day) – Perfect do it all, middle ground bike that’s got just enough power for mountain roads, yet enough comfort for city traffic. After testing this vs the CL300, Rebel 300 and even the CB500x, the Triumph wins it for pure all day riding pleasure. That said we prefer the Speed 400 if it’s available as the geometry allows for a bit more fun in the corners.
Yamaha MT-07 (1,700 THB per day) – More than enough torque for anything the north can throw at you, fun, good handling and comfortable enough for all day riding. We’d consider recommending the MT-09 but anyone who’s ridden one before will tell you that bike tries to end you in the best conditions let alone wet, slippery mountain roads.
